OVERVIEW
The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) provides a unique way for adults to earn a high school diploma. The program allows adults to demonstrate their high school level skills by applying their life experiences in real-life situations. NEDP awards a traditional high school diploma to adults who have acquired many of their high school level abilities through work, family, and community experiences. HOW GROWTH IS MEASURED AS DEFINED BY THE TEST DEVELOPER
The program consists of two phases: the Diagnostic Phase and the Assessment Phase.
Diagnostic Phase: NEDP’s Proficiency Cut Scores to enter an NEDP program are CASAS cut score of:
a. Reading 187/188: 236 or higher
b. Math 15/16: 230 or higher
c. Writing Diagnostic: Less than 10% error rate

Assessment Phase: In the assessment phase, the participant demonstrates writing, speaking, mathematics, problem-solving, reading, and critical thinking academic skills through the performance of real-life tasks. Embedded in these real-life tasks are sixty-five individual competencies. These competencies fall within 5 task books. A trained NEDP assessor determines that the participant has demonstrated each of these competencies with one hundred percent accuracy.
The Assessment Phase also requires that each participant satisfy an individualized competency. The Individualized Competency Diagnostic Instrument (ICDI) is verified through an assessment in one of the following:
  • Occupational/Vocational Competencies
  • Specialized Competencies
  • Advanced Academic Competency
High School Diploma: Once the NEDP participant has satisfied all Assessment Phase requirements, the high school diploma is awarded.

RELIABILITY
CASAS revalidates the NEDP competencies every 5 years. The goal of the revalidation is to compile a master list of competencies that reflect the most comprehensive thinking about essential 21st century skills needed for success in the world of work, further education, as well as family and community.
